Canned mushrooms are great! I love them! Some people hate mushrooms with a heated passion. Sorry about that!
I mostly use them on the quick and usual frozen pizza and definitely on my homemade fresh pizza I whip up at home. I do have one tip and most people already know this: after draining the mushrooms, smash them down even more with a wood spoon or whatever you can find to drive the water out of them. It's unbelievable how much water mushrooms absorb. If you don't get that water out of them your pizza will become a soggy mess. The oven heat won't be enough to dry them out, so give them a boost with the smashing treatment! I did a little research on white mushrooms. Did you know that Pennsylvania is the leading state producing agaricus (white) mushrooms with California being second? Fresh mushrooms are grown and proccessed at a staggering 800 million pounds a year verses canned at 100 million (rough estimates). |
That's just white mushroom production. That doesn't include cremini, portabellas, shiitake, oyster, wood ear, enoki, morels and chanterelles! It's a huge, mind blowing big market. Mushrooms are a great additive to a great dish; I add a Food Run Fix mushroom fix for you. Skin in the game, so they say. It involves a great steak, sirloin or ribeye. Fry that seasoned meat on high heat; sear it for a few minutes per side. Add canned mushrooms and sliced onions (or add sliced fresh mushrooms), wrap it up with a tortilla and cheese. Boom. Protein, flavor & nutrients in a wrap. It's great eating.
